</tbody></table>So I have decided that the best way to catalog my experiences in Prague is to not do daily posts but to merge them all together into one longer post. I will be adding more to it as time goes by so this is technically not the final post. The pictures directly below are the pictures from our first day in Prague where we visited the Old Town Square which is basically the center of Prague's history.<br />

One of these experiences was with a man who was staying at Sir Toby's. I believe it was the fourth night staying at Sir Toby's and I was hanging out in the lounge area and got to talking with a man named Micheal. He was Canadian and had never met a Jewish person before. What was profound about our interaction was that somewhere in our conversation e basically said that all of his perceptions of Jewish people were now going to be based off of me. It is profound because I became a representative of an entire people in a split second and from now on this mans thoughts about jewish people in general would be based off of me. I thought it was very powerful to be the representative of a people. </div></div><div style="text-align: center;"> </div><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div><b>Another Reflection:</b></div><div> I visited St. Charles bridge while in Prague and it was beautiful. While there a learned a little bit about it and gave me some insight to reflect on it. Crossing the Vltava river, it was built in 1357. It was the only means of crossing the river and connected the Old Town with the Prague Castle. As a result of it being the only place to cross, it made Prague an important trade route between eastern and western europe. As I walked across the bridge, looking at the beautiful baroque statues of saints and patron saints, I thought about all that must have gone on on this bridge and all of the history that must have happened here. Prague contains one of the worlds oldest Jewish communities and my relatives are from around this area. I could have been walking the same exact route as my ancestors had. With the deep Jewish foundation of this city, it is possible to see how religion allows people to work together and form cultures. These cultures then have the ability to self reflect and look at their own social justice systems. I went over the bridge only once but throughout my time in Prague, I saw it many times. It was always a reminder of the deep history of Prague and of how much had gone on in this city.</div><div><br />

<div><b>Yet Another Reflection: The Old Jewish Cemetery</b><br />
<b><br />
</b></div><div> Within the Jewish Quarter of Prague, which I will be reflecting on later, resides the Old Jewish cemetery. It has been there for thousands of years and holds many influential people's final resting places. When I visited the cemetery, I was struck with a sense of littleness. The fact that my ancestors here have existed for so long compared to Jews in the United States, which is only 200 years Old, is awesome. The different types of gravestones from different eras displayed visually the timeline of Jewish people in Prague. It gave me a proud feeling that Jews have always been in Prague and will always be in Prague no matter what the opposition.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal"> Today was totally consumed by travel to Prague. We left our hostel in Vienna and travelled on the subway to the train station. We then went on a train for four hours transferring in a place called Breclav in the Czech republic. For the majority of the rest of the trip, we are going to be in the Czech republic in Prague. When we arrived in Prague, we found our new hostel, Sir Toby’s, and were totally exhausted so we just passed out for the night. Unfortunately because it was just a travel day, I could not have much thoughtful insight or analysis of what I had seen that day. We did have dinner on a train car though which was very cool.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

</div><span style="font-family: Cambria; font-size: 12pt;"> Today was our last day in Vienna and we decided to meet up with two people from our class, Carmen and Sydney, to visit the Schönbrunn palace, where many famous leaders lived or stayed while occupying, such as Napoleon. Although we were not allowed to take pictures inside of the palace, we did an audio-guided tour and learned about the history of the palace and the people who lived there. It was a all day long excursion and we explored the palace grounds afterwards where we were allowed to take pictures. What I took away from this visit was the amount of social disconnect there was in the history of Vienna. What I mean by this is how there were few very rich and powerful people who controlled everything and the rest were very poor and really had no say in what happened. From this, I believe that although Vienna’s structure for creating equality is not perfect, it has come a very long way from what it was in its history. This of course is not to say that what is happening now is a good or insufficient model for social justice. It is merely a look at the progress that has been made. This being our last day, when we got back to our hostel, we packed up and went to sleep to prepare for a long day of travel the next day.</span> <br />

I will continue posting until the end of my travels. Gabe and I woke up fairly early and we ate a final breakfast as a class. Then, everyone got packed up, said goodbye, and went their separate ways. A few people were staying in Vienna a little longer so Gabe and I made plans to meet up with them tomorrow and go to a Palace. Gabe and I hopped on the subway and checked in at our hostel we would be staying at for two days before we head to Prague. After we checked in, we decided to explore Vienna a little more. We went to a torture museum, thinking it might help with my project of seeing Vienna as a model of social justice and service but unfortunately it was very low budget and although somewhat educational, mostly just weirded us out. The museum was very small and in what seemed to be a old bunker so it was underground. Right next door there was an Aquarium/Zoo so we decided to visit that next. I love animals in general so I had a blast there. After that, we were pretty tired from the long day and went back to the hostel to rest.<br />

We woke up at about 6:30 and left for the train at 7:30. Today was the day we visit Mauthausen, one of the concentration camps in Austria and one of the only ones that was preserved mostly how it was. We arrived at the train station where there was plaque that stated that this was where all those who were imprisoned at Mauthausen started their trek to the camp. As we walked, we saw quarry’s where workers were forced to work and I tried to envision those people working there. When we finally arrived, everyone’s legs were very tired and I was ready to experience this memorial to the tragedy of the Holocaust. On a side note I have learn that the Holocaust is no longer the correct term for what happened. There is a movement to now call it the Shoah so I will be calling what was the called Holocaust “The Shoah” in this blog as it is now the more accurate term. As we started touring the camp, we split up into smaller groups and it ended up that it was Gabe, my roommate, Carmen, the TA, and I in one group. We began by going to the main gate of the camp and I saw the way that Jews were trucked into the camp. What I did not know was the amazing amount of memorials that were constructed outside of the camp. This road also overlooked the main Quarry where Jews and the others enslaved there were forced to work. I had mixed emotions ranging from sadness to curiosity at this point and I tried to read every memorial if it was possible but I also did not want to run out of time when looking at the camp so we decided to move to the gate of the camp and go through it. We saw the barracks where people slept, the wailing wall, where knew arrivals were forced to stand chained against the wall sometimes for days depending on the mood of the guards. We saw the Kitchen, Laundry, and other barracks. One barrack, Barrack 5, was called the “Jewish Block.” This was very powerful to me after what I learned. This was the barrack where most of the Jewish prisoners were held and killed shortly afterword. Then we arrived at the most heart wrenching part of the camp. We arrived at the crematorium, execution area, and gas chambers. As we went into the crematorium, I was picturing what had happened there and I realized I had an expression of disgust on my face without even realizing it. As we went through the rooms where peoples bodies were mutilated by taking off their tattoos and breaking out gold crowns, etc, and the room where bodies were piles to the ceiling, I began to feel a mix of emotions ranging from disgust to sadness to anger and many more in between. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="text-indent: 0.5in;"> What finally got to me and almost made me break down in tears was the execution room and gas chambers. In fact, Carmen decided she could not handle it and waited for us outside. We saw the iron girder where thousands of Jews were hung in the most humiliating way possible. Finally, we moved to the gas chambers, which, as the stories I’ve heard said, did look like shower rooms, and as I walked into it, I was overcome by emotions and had to step back. I was standing in the room where at least 10,200 people were systematically murdered. I realized that I was covering my mouth in awe and disgust without even realizing it and this moment was one of the most powerful moments at the camp for me. Almost 200,000 people, mostly Jews, were deported to Mauthausen. What was more disturbing to me was that I felt that there was a lack of focus on the fact that it was Jews that were being killed. Around 100,000 people died at Mauthausen and it seemed to focus more on the fact that they were people and not on the fact that they were being killed just for the fact that they were Jewish. We toured the rest of the camp but this time I had in the chambers was the most powerful part of the experience for me. </span><b style="text-indent: 0.5in;">Hopefully others in my class will comment on what was the most powerful part for them or their thoughts on our visit in general</b><span style="text-indent: 0.5in;">. After we all met up, we took a cab back to the train station and then took the train back to Vienna. This was an all-day excursion so we ended our day with dinner at an Austrian Restaurant and rapped up our class part of the trip by talking a bit about our experience and Carl gave out “Awards” that he definitely came up with on the spot. Overall, a very long but good day. I wish I could say more in words but I willlet pictures do some of the talking for me.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>The entrance to the UN buildings</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table> Today was the day we visited the United Nations! i was very excited to see what it was like as I had been to the one in New York. After a short subway ride, we arrived at the UN buildings. The security there was surprisingly laid back and let everyone go through even though most of us beeped at the metal detector. Unfortunately, the tour we were signed up for, a human rights tour, was not available or something so we were given the standard UN tour. While it was somewhat interesting, most of it did not apply to what we were learning in the class. There was one room on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was pertinent and it was informative. Also, there were many works of art throughout the UN which I thought were beautiful. After our tour ended, we were supposed to meet with the Director of UN GIFT which stands for United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking. We were only able to meet with their intern, Sophia, but it was still very informative. She lead us through a presentation of what human trafficking is and what UN GIFT's role was in it. They are basically there to provide expertise and are an alliance of six major organizations. They provide training in the private sector to attempt to make business owners more aware of where their product is coming from and work through a few other different areas. The issue I saw was that although it seemed like UN GIFT was a huge factor in the fight against human trafficking, they did not have much authority. This is just what i took from the presentation and I am not 100% sure that this is the case but from what it looked like to me, the NGO's are the only ones who really have been making a difference.<br />

It was also our most busy day yet. We first visited EZRA a Jewish organization dedicated to helping victims of the Holocaust. They are called EZRA because it means "help" in hebrew. The first thing that I noticed was that they had very high security there and I was even asked not to take pictures. After we arrived there, we were brought into a presentation room. A women then gave a presentation on what EZRA was and what they did. The presentation started out with a overview of the Jewish community in Austria through history. To summarize it, there were 200,000 Jews in Austria in 1938; then by 1945 after the Holocaust, 5000 Holocaust survivors formed the Vienna Jewish society. Now there are around 12000 Jews in Austria which consist of about .5% of the population. This organization was very interesting because it was funded mainly by the city of Vienna which in many other ways is not very supportive of Jewish people but I will touch on that later. One thing that stood out to me was that EZRA does not only help Jews or only other survivors of the Holocaust. They also expand their service to other trauma victims as they are trained to help with this sort of thing. After hearing this, I am learning that it is a commonly held belief in the Jewish community that Jews are supposed to help all people, not just their own and that I for one believe in this moral code. The organization works by aiding in peoples psychological health. They work from two departments, the outpatient department and the social work department, which allows them to help the greatest amount of people. They also operate using a model of "what happened to you" rather than "what is wrong with you." Another topic that she highlighted was Austria's role in Aiding Jews after the holocaust. What she said was that Austria has refused to accept responsibility for Nazi crimes and has adopted the victim mentality saying they they were victims because they were also occupied. By taking this mentality, they were able to rationalize not aiding in the compensation and benefits to victims of the Holocaust that Germany had to pay. As a result of this, many survivors were excluded from social security and other benefits which resulted in many of these people died. Another way Austria was unhelpful to victims was that they made a law saying that a person could only be considered a citizen if their father was an Austrian citizen. This basically screwed over a lot of children of survivors. Another way they have been unhelpful is that if people left Austria, the government has made it difficult for people who left to come back. Jewish immigrants are excluded from certain rights such as health/social car etc. When the presentation was over, she opened the floor to questions. So i decided to ask if there was still discrimination against Jews in Austria today. Her answer made me sad because I know this is true of many places today. She said that there was still discrimination against Jews in Austria except that it was now hidden in the undertone of people. Meaning that although people do not say things out right, you can hear it in their voice and see it in their actions. What I took from this experience is that although the Austrian government is not very helpful itself in social services, there are organizations who work to fight that and help people. This is a part of the model of social services that Vienna displays.<br />

I was very excited for this visit because I assumed that they woud have a lot of interesting artifacts and information there and I could learn a lot about the history of Jews in Europe. Unfortunately, I may have set my expectations too high because I was actually very disappointed with the museum. There was not much in depth information or helpful artifacts there that I could learn from. It almost seemed as if it was a museum for people who had never heard of Judaism and only wanted a brief overview of what it was. The main exhibit, which was most of the museum, was on Movies in Hollywood and I don't believe that it was prevalent at all to my thirst for knowledge about my heritage and history. They did have one room that had artifacts from different temples throughout history and also had different artifacts that were peoples depictions of Jews in the past. Some that stood out were canes that depicted Jews on the handle and it was very obvious the stereotypes that were there. I hope to visit the Jewish Quarter in Vienna at some point on this trip to hopefully have a better learning experience.<br />

After the Jewish Museum, we then hung out in Stephanplatz for a little bit and explored. After that, we came back to the Kellar where we meet with a Baptist pastor named walter. He gave us his ideas and views on social justice in the world and it was very thought provoking. One thing that was very interesting was how different Baptist in Europe are from American Baptists. The whole idea of the Baptist church in Europe was that your free to choose, free to change, and free to leave. This is a foreign idea to the ideas of christianity I have seen in my life. From what i have seen in the past, it has been much more about everyone having to believe the same exact thing and if not, they will not go to heaven. Another thing that he said which stuck with me was that Baptists coming to America were the roots of human rights in America. When we got to the point about the motivation to do good, another person on the trip, Gabe, and I brought up some views of the Jewish philosopher Levinas. He says that people are moved to action by the face of the other and in this idea, God is not the motivation. What surprised me was what Walter said. He said that it does not matter where the motivation to do good comes from but he "plugs into God" for strength to keep on helping and going. He said that it is very hard not to get tired, depressed, and cynical if you do not have something to give you power. Although i am not sure if I agree with him entirely, it was a very interesting thing to hear. I am still struggling with where my motivation to help my fellow human comes from after this talk because I could not relate with this idea that the motivation comes from God and the idea that man is made in the image of God so that we are all equal.<br />

</tbody></table> After we talked with Walter, we left and got ready for something that I was highly excited for. Walter, along with a lot of other people we had met on the trip and others we did not know yet, were throwing a Krampus party at the Kellar, Krampus is a mythical creature who accompanies St. Nicholis during the Christmas season. He looks like a hairy devil and punishes naughty children. Every year there is a celebration on Krampus where everyone wears black and red, gets together, and has a party. We got there a little early so we got to know a lot of new people pretty well before the party got to large. At midnight, Walter created a pot of a special drink that they only make on Krampus. It is a pot of gluvine and other ingredients. They then put a cylinder of suger over the top of the pot and pour flaming rum onto it until it has all disolved into the pot. This, to say the least, was a spectacle. I enjoyed myself greatly but eventually got tired and decided to go back to Stephanushaus to sleep around 1 because I was tired. What was really funny was how annoyed my new Austrian friends were that I was going to bed. Apparently here in Austria, no one sleeps and going to sleep "early" is frowned upon. Overall, it was a wonderful day.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>This was on the wall in the lobby of HIAS which is their symbol. Notice how it includes a menora and the shape of the globe in it.</b></td></tr>
</tbody></table> On day three we began our visits to service organizations. The first one on the list was HIAS, or Hebrew Immigrant Aid Service, which is a organization which helps people in religious minority groups of different countries become refugees and move to the United States. One thing that stood out to me about this organization was that although it is a Jewish organization, none of the workers here in Vienna are Jewish. In fact, when we asked what the overall religious orientation of the workforce was, they told us that they did not know because it is a private matter that no one really feels the need to talk about openly. This apparently is the norm for EUropean organizations; no one really talks about their religion and there isn't such a clear division of church and state. Unfortunately, the Director of HIAS in vienna was sick and was unable to meet with us but we did get to sit down with two employees working there. They told us a little about their organization and said that at this current point in time, they are helping Iranian religious minorities which are almost all christian. I found this particularly interesting because although this organization was originally founded to help Jewish people immigrate, they had expanded past their foundation and to a wider group. What I believe happened in HIAS, and what tends to happen in organizations working with the government, is that by working with government, it does not allow them to discriminate against certain groups which creates a more secular organization.<br />
One of the two men we met with was named Jan (<i>Yan</i>). Jan is a public liaison at HIAS and gave me very interesting insights. I have been struggling with the question of what motivates people to act in a socially just way and if it is base in religion. Because of this, I decided to ask Jan what his motivation was. He began with the story of how he got into the field of social service. His journey began from the medical side of things as he worked as a nutritionist in Africa trying to help children and adults get the right food and eat healthily. What he said was that he was always interested in food and how it defined cultures. After working there for a while, he moved to other areas helping out and eventually ended up working for HIAS. And for the answer of what his motivation was, he gave a profound response. He said that when people are in a position of privilege, see inequality and have the ability to help, they must act. This follows an idea presented by a philosopher by the name of Levinas who says that when one is presented with the face of the other, it creates a call to conscience which motivates them to act. This idea is very interesting because it is not rooted in religion. This idea is rooted in human nature and relationships. From what I can tell, HIAS in Vienna has mostly moved past religious motivation.<br />
As I said before, I was very surprised at the lack of Jewish influence in this organization. Knowing it was a Jewish organization, I was expecting something completely different when I walked in. I have grown up as a culturally Jewish Atheist which means that I am a part of the Jewish community although I do not believe in god. I have always been involved with volunteering and social service projects whether they were religiously affiliated or not. My motivation for being involved with these was never a religious one and I have recently been wondering what my true motivation has been. With HIAS, I have come one step closer to answering my question because I can see myself in some of what HIAS in Vienna is. It is an organization that comes from a Jewish background and does service not because of Judaism but in a secular motivational way. I am a person who has come from a Jewish background who does service work from a different place other than religion. <br />
After we visited HIAS, we visited the Christmas Market at Carlsplatz. With the tradition of Austria, I was able to try the drink Gluhvine which is a tradition at Christmas markets. It had a wonderful atmosphere and was a wonderful way to rap up the day.<br />

The first night we all got situated and got to know each other a little bit. In the morning we all met up at this place called the Kellar where we had orientation for the class. We talked about the main issues that we will be covering in the class. One of the main issues that I want to face is why is religion needed for social justice to occur? We talked about the issue of human trafficking and how sometimes it can be an issue when victims are helped by religious groups, they assume the identity of the group because they do not know how to have their own identity. The idea that the values that lead to social justice are found in the teachings of all the main religions. This is a big factor in why religion plays such a large part in social justice. The question for me is still is it actually necessary to have religion and believe in God to have social justice occur. As a Atheist I do not feel as I have to do good in the world because of some higher calling. Yet, I still feel the need to help out my fellow man and do good in the world. My question is, why is this? At this point, I cannot fully answer this question but I am getting closer to a answer.<br />
After that we went to a Cafe which was one of Sigmund Freud's hangouts. We then toured the city for a little bit and visited the University here. Finally, we went to see St. Stephen's Cathedral which was beautiful. The day was rapped up with a Greek dinner and listening to jazz at pub.<br />

I am about to embark on a trip to Vienna and Prague where I hope to gain new knowledge and learn about my heritage. I am taking a class on Religious and Social Justice with Professor Carl Rashke in which we will be learning about Vienna's role in social justice. Right now I am packing up my last few things before I head to the airport. Next time I write, I will hopefully be across the Atlantic. This blog is meant to serve as a medium through which my discovery of my jewish identity will be able to be seen and also my views on Vienna as a model city for social and religious justice.Joey Fisherhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11601565536673616559noreply@blogger.com0
